Fraser Calhoun Quartet Featuring Mulgrew Miller
Saturday, March 16, 2013 from 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM (PDT)
Mulgrew Miller, one of “the leading pianists of his generation” (Boston Globe), is embarking on a cross-Canadian tour as a member of rising Canadian jazz saxophonist Fraser Calhoun’s quartet, which also includes local bassist Rubim de Toledo and drummer Jon McCaslin. Their first performance will be 8:00pm on Saturday, March 16, 2013 at River Park Church.
Mulgrew Miller is a veteran of tours and recordings with such ensembles as Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, the Woody Shaw Quintet, the Mercer Ellington Orchestra and the Tony Williams Quintet. He is renowned worldwide but has seldom made tour stops in Canada. The tour, which begins in Calgary and travels through Edmonton, Toronto, Waterloo and Montreal, is a rare opportunity for Canadians to experience one of the fathers of modern jazz language.
As part of the lead-up to the Saturday performance, Mr. Calhoun will be conducting free clinics at a number of Calgary public high schools and post secondary institutions. The tour, which combines both teaching clinics and performances, is designed to expose Canadian music students and jazz aficionados alike to Mr. Miller’s visionary jazz interpretation.
