Description

A documentary by Marla Fields. Narrated by Michael Martin Murphey, American singer-songwriter

5:30 Comments from the documentary filmmaker Marla Fields, followed by showing of the film.

Frank Reaugh (1860-1945), one of the state’s earliest and most distinguished artists, is well known to historians, curators, and collectors of early Texas art. In this feature-length documentary shot in high-definition, a new audience will discover the remarkable contributions of this American artist, inventor, naturalist, and educator.

Reaugh was a key figure in the region’s development of visual art and art education during the turn of the 19th century and his life story serves as an excellent example of the early pioneer spirit that is synonymous with Texas and the American West. Featuring his pastel landscapes and nature studies held in public and private collections, student interview, curators, and gallerists, and period photographs, ephemera, and original music, this documentary film finally brings deserved attention to this visionary’s fascinating life while acknowledging his many contributions to society.

SMU's own Sam Ratcliffe, head of the Jerry Bywaters Special Collectionsin the Hamon Arts Library is one of twelve interviewees in the documentary. SMU was a contributor to film with the loan of several historical images from the extensive SMU Digital Collection including the painting Blanco Canyon. Several of Frank Reaugh' s students studied or taught at SMU, such as Alexandre Hogue, Florence McClung, and Lucretia Donnell.

As a freelance video producer and writer since 1994, native Texan Marla Fields has been responsible for and assisted in the creative, pre-production, production, and post-production of various training, promotional, and educational projects, both local and nationwide. With over 20 years of experience in overseeing numerous productions from script-to-screen in the corporate arena, Frank Reaugh: Pastel Poet of the Texas Plains is her first full-length documentary.
