Description

The Charlottesville Jazz Society and The Jefferson School African American Heritage Center present Ku-umba Frank Lacy and 10³²K.

The Charlottesville Jazz Society is pleased to announce the first concert of its fall 2017 series, featuring the cooperative trio 10³²K. The concert will be held at The Jefferson School African American Heritage Center on Thursday August 24th at 7:30 pm. Veteran trombonist Ku-umba Frank Lacy will perform with his New York based 10³²K trio, featuring Kevin Ray on bass and Andrew Drury on percussion. Their debut recording, “That Which is Planted,” and have recorded a new CD to be releasedlater this year.

10³²K is known as the Planck temperature-- the temperature at which matter ceases to exist, conventional physics breaks down, and, according to Lacy, “strange things begin to happen to space and time”. He should know, as he studied physics as well as music in college. Originally from Houston, Lacy began gigging professionally in his early teens, and since arriving in New York in 1981 has worked with, among others, Slide Hampton, Lester Bowie, Art Blakey, McCoy Tyner, Abdullah Ibrahim, Roy Hargrove and Steve Turre. In addition to the group he’ll perform with in Charlottesville, He is a 20-plus year veteran of the Mingus Big Band,

Bassist Kevin Ray has been a fixture on the New York jazz scene for many years now, playing frequently with pianist Matthew Shipp. Andrew Drury is a wildly creative percussionist, playing in addition to the drum kit, a variety of kitchen implements and hardware.

For this special performance, the trio will perform original material from its forthcoming recording, as well as a selection of compositions by some of the masters of modern jazz, like Charles Mingus and Thelonious Monk.
