Description

What will be covered?

Introduction to the Mojo and the Xilinx Spartan 6 XC6SLX9 FPGA, verilog programming using the Xilinx ISE, writing test benches, analog inputs, PWM, Finite State Machines.

About the course:

This is a beginner level course aimed at introducing students to FPGAs, Verilog and necessary digital design skills. FPGAs are one of the most successful integrated circuits in digital design, they are an important initial step in the field test of microprocessors and ASIC (application specific integrated circuits) and allow high speed digital circuit design which can be reconfigured in the field. They are used in oscilloscopes, medical imaging systems, software defined radios and speech recognition. Verilog is a popular hardware definition language (HDL) standard used to program FPGAs and shall be introduced in this course. Students shall learn the basics of programming with Verilog, simulate their designs and implement it using the Embedded Micro Mojo development board.

Prerequisites:

  • The Programming with Arduino workshop OR
  • Basic familiarity with electronics and Arduinos, such as PWM, Analog inputs and Serial Communications. Basic familiarity with digital design, such as logic gates, flip-flops and K-maps.
  • Familiarity of Signal measurement using NI/Digilent Analog Discovery.

Topics for the Class:

  • Introduction to Digital Design and FPGAs
  • Introduction to Xilinx ISE and Verilog
  • Creating Test Benches
  • Introduction to the Embedded Micro Mojo
  • Analog input
  • PWM output
  • Serial Communications
  • Finite state machines
