Event description

Description

Recent decades have seen unprecedented amounts of people migrating and transitioning across European and international boundaries. Pushed by global conflicts, changing economics and precarious geo-politics, these people are regularly subjected to clashes with security forces, xenophobia, and an intolerant media, leading to what some might call a “global migration crisis”. These pressures have become increasingly acute in recent years, especially in Europe with changing borders, protectionist politics and a rise in popularist right-wing ideology.

This event brings together international activists and researchers to question and explore the experiences of the modern migrant and to explore the complexity, create awareness and call for solidarity.

The event held at the North London Tavern will begin with four short talks on the above themes, followed by question/answer session and the opportunity for more informal conversation with the speakers over a drink at the bar accompanied by live music by Two Giants Trio.

SPEAKERS

The evening’s talks will chart the journey of migrants into and across Europe, starting at the Mediterranean border where Valentina Signorelli (PhD) will introduce themes around boat migration and European politics. Then Doug Specht picks up the journey mapping the tear gassing of migrants as they move across Europe. The talks will conclude with two discussions around different shades of being a migrant. First, from Nathasha Fernando around what is to being a migrant in Italy and Marina Anastasio discussing international students’ mobility in the UK.
