Event Details

The City Congregation is proud to host a three-day seminar of the International Institute for Secular Humanistic Judaism presented by Rabbi Adam Chalom: FOUR QUESTIONS for TODAY’S NEW SECULAR JEW

Friday, April 25
(14th Street Y)

    #1 WHY are we… still Jewish? (7:30pm)

A rational response to the Holocaust might have been to leave Judaism. Haven’t we suffered enough? Yet we cling to our Jewish heritage. Why do we stay connected? Why do others join us? And how is this identity shaped by the legacy of the Holocaust?

Saturday, April 26
(The Computer School)

    #2 WHAT are we… ? (10am-Noon)

Does it make a difference how we define ourselves? Are we a Race? A People? A Tribe? An Ethnicity? A Religion? A Philosophy? A Culture? A Memory?

    #3 WHO are we… ? (1-3pm)

What binds us together? What do secular Jews in New York have in common with Hasidim in Boro Park or Israelis in Tel Aviv or the West Bank? Are we really one people, or many peoples?

Sunday, April 27

    #4 HOW are we…? (3:30-5pm)

How do we live and celebrate our Jewishness? Through prayer and ritual? Social action? Intellectual debate? Bagels and lox and book clubs? What will be the Jewish heritage we pass on to the future?

Rabbi Chalom was ordained by the International Institute for Secular Humanistic Judaism in 2001, and received his PhD in Near Eastern Studies – Hebrew and Jewish Cultural Studies concentration from the University of Michigan. In addition to his work with the Institute, Rabbi Chalom is the rabbi of Kol Hadash Humanistic Congregation in north suburban Chicago, Illinois.
