Event description

Description

Visit 4 of Rhode Island's most historic houses of worship:

  • Touro Synagogue, oldest synagaogue in America and an enduring symbol of America's commitment to religious freedom for all
  • United Baptist Church, where Newport's oldest congregation -- founded by John Clarke, author of Rhode Island's 1663 Charter guaranteeing religious freedom -- worships
  • Newport Congregational Church, a remarkable building whose sanctuary features stained glass and paintings by the great Newport artist John LaFarge
  • Channing Memorial Church, honoring a founder of American unitarianism, Newport-born William Ellery Channing, and whose beautiful sancutary features stained glass by LaFarge and others

The tour begins at the Loeb Visitors Center at Touro Synagogue, where the synagogue tour starts promptly at 10:00 am. Arrive early to buy tickets and enjoy the Center's exhibits on Touro and the history of religious freedom. The Center opens at 9:30 am.

Visitors will enjoy a short walk to each house of worship for an approximately 30-minute seated presentation on the building, the congregation, and its role in the development of religious freedom. A guide will lead visitors to each house of worship. The walk between each building takes less than 10 minutes, and is flat except for a short uphill walk to Channing.

Not all buildings are wheelchair accessible. This tour is not recommended for young children.
