Event description

As part of the Lilly Scholars Network Give Back INitiative, your local Lilly Endowment Community Scholars invite you to serve alongside them to help improve your community!

For Fountain County, NICHES Land Steward, Justin Harmeson, will lead volunteers to an area of Fountain County's Shawnee Bottoms to pull an invasive plant called Garlic Mustard. The plant is easy to pull, and can be done much more efficiently with a large group of people. If you have not yet stepped foot onto a NICHES property, this would be the perfect opportunity to experience what they have to offer our communities.

Information about NICHES can be found on their website.

Things to Bring With / Dress Considerations Dress for exploring outdoors –

  • comfortable all terrain shoes are recommended.

  • Layers help prevent being overheated or chilled.

  • Long pants and long sleeves prevent your skin being exposed to insect bites or plants that cause skin reactions.

  • A water bottle ensures proper hydration.

  • No restroom facilities at the property.

  • Practice ‘leave no trace’ exploring – if you carry an item on the property, carry it off again, including trash, food wrappers, beverage containers, etc. Feel free to remove any trash you do find; collaborative effort helps keep properties free of litter.

Please note that we will be taking photos/video at this event and plan to share them via our e-newsletter, website and social media channels. We may also submit photos/videos to the local press. By signing up to volunteer, you agree to allow the Lilly Scholars Network to use your voice, name, picture and other information about you for promotional, publicity, or organizational purposes.

As Lilly scholars we are incredibly grateful for the investments our communities made in our education, and we thank you for helping us pay it forward!

From the SR 28 and US 41 intersection in Attica Take US 41 south 4.9 miles and turn right onto E 650 N.

Next, turn right onto County Road 160 W/N Williamsport Road.

From here, the road jogs left for 1/10 of a mile becoming County Road 700 N then jogs back right to become County Road 170 W/N Williamsport Road.

In 0.5 miles turn left onto W 750 N/W Covered Bridge Road. *be aware that as of March 2016 no road sign identifies W 750 / Covered Bridge Road at the intersection with N. Williamsport Road.

If you cross to the north side of the Wabash, you have missed the turn.

Travel West on W Covered Bridge Road through a curve to the left and a curve back to the right.

When you get to the next curve take the short lane into the parking area where you will see the large wooden “Shawnee Bottoms” sign.

Contact info for your project lead is below. We encourage you to reach out with any questions.
