Foundations of Human & Organizational Performance, brought to you by ORCHSE Strategies, LLC and Muschara Error Management Consulting

Instructor: Tony Muschara

Human performance – your people – introduce uncertainty into work. This human risk is probably the biggest risk to the reliability and safety of your operations. Effective management of this risk must be consistent with the following principles:

  1. People are fallible, an intrinsic feature (hazard) of the human condition.
  2. People want to do a good job. Error is not a choice.
  3. Error is predictable and manageable.
  4. Risk lurks everywhere, is dynamic, and emerges from the way an operation is designed, constructed, operated, maintained, and managed.
  5. Organizations are perfectly tuned to get the results they are getting.
  6. The causes of tomorrow’s events exist today.

If you are new to Human & Organizational Performance (H&OP), or looking to strengthen your knowledge of the foundational principles of H&OP, then this is the course for you. Instructor Tony Muschara is one of the leading specialists and authors in human performance, and was instrumental in developing the principles, tools, and training that played a key role in helping the Institute of Nuclear Power Operators (INPO) drive better understanding of how to manage the human risk to processes and plants in the nuclear power industry. Since leaving INPO Tony has helped companies in a wide range of industry sectors learn and apply these same principles and tools to create more resilient and safer operations. Tony is also the author of the book Risk-Based Thinking: Managing the Uncertainty of Human Error in Operations.

This 2-day class will be organized into the following sections to help participants understand how to take what they learn back and apply it in real-world setting of their companies:

  1. Worker Aspects
  2. System / Management Aspects
  3. Integration and Implementation

The course will use a combination of instruction by Tony Muschara and small breakout groups to give participants the opportunity to learn collaboratively with Tony and the other participants.
