About this Event

Immune, Lymph, & Skin Self-Care

This weekend, we’ll be looking at actions, herbs, protocols, and recipes for Immune and Skin Self-Care including using herbs as medicine and food. There will also a component of medicine making.

In this weekend's class, we strive to give you a better understanding of the difference between acute and chronic disease processes and care as well as a basic capacity to apply the knowledge you develop for safe self-care and in-home use.

Saturday, December 7th

10:00 am -1:00 pm – Immune System Overview; Autoimmunity & Herbs

The morning we will begin with an ‘energetic perspective’ on the season of winter and look at ways to keep our immune system healthy throughout the year. We’ll cover Immune Physiology and then look at a herbalist's approach to autoimmunity. Our Immune Herbal Materia Medica will cover dietary guidelines, anti-microbial, and immune modulating herbs.

2:00-5:00 pm – Deep Immune Support Herbs

This afternoon’s class starts with getting to know an array of Medicinal Mushrooms and herbs known for their Immune Supportive actions. These include Reishi, Shiitake, Maitake, Chaga, Turkeytail, Cordyceps, Grifola, Astragalus, Rhodiola, Pau d' Arco. Discussion on how these are best used medicinally will be undertaken. A session on an introduction to classical diagnosis will also be covered.

Sunday, December 8th

10:00 am-1:00 pm - Acute Issues & the Immune System

This morning, we’ll examine acute and infectious immune issues, concentrating on the herbal anti-microbial, anti-fungal, and diaphoretic herbs for fever management. We’ll also touch on the subjects of influenza, the common cold and insect-borne diseases such as Lyme. Finally, we’ll cook up some immune support Elderberry Syrup and Garlic-Ginger Oxymel to keep the bugs at bay!

2:00-5:00 pm - The Lymphatic System & Skin

The weekend will finish up with a focus on the Skin and Lymphatic systems, which are actually part of our immune system & a key body defense. We seem to forget that our skin is our largest organ and often needs tending, particularly in the winter months! It protects us from hot & cold, chemicals, light and micro-organisms so let’s treat it well. Classic Alterative and Lymphatic herbs to assist in elimination. Diaphoretic herbs also work on the skin & will be covered this afternoon. We’ll also look at blends for psoriasis, eczema, burns and wounds.

You may join us for the weekend or for a single day.

For those who are interested in clinical practice, students can continue on for a second year of study to gain a Professional Herbalism Certification.
