Event description

Description

Respiratory System & EENT (Eyes, Ears, Nose & Throat)

We simply can’t exist without the air we breathe. Our lungs must deal with the assaults of everyday life such air pollution, cold & flu ‘bugs’, pollens, and other allergens that can cause allergies, asthma, and COPD. It pays to nurture our airways and lungs, remembering to stop and breathe deep, drink soothing herb teas, and take herbal formulas to rebuild and calm the tissues.

Saturday, October 5

Herbal Respiratory Actions and Materia Medica

10am- 1pm: We begin this module with an introduction to the season of Autumn, the element of air, and dive into some basic respiratory physiology. We’ll follow up with look at herbal actions that help balance the ‘air element’ such as respiratory tropho-restoratives or normalizers like Mullein, Garlic, Elder, & Thyme, and relaxants and demulcents such as Elecampane, Osha, Marshmallow, & Licorice. We’ll also look at the specifics around coughs, one of the most common issues in the respiratory system.

2-5 pm: In the afternoon, we’ll do a herb walk around the garden to acquaint you with the organoleptics (smell, taste, feel, appearance) of respiratory herbs growing in the garden and their medicinal uses. We’ll also continue our exploration of herbal respiratory actions or categories including expectorants, mucolytics, and anti-spamodics and look at the specific herbal blends for seasonal allergies, chronic coughs and asthma.

Sunday, October 6

Introduction to the Western Herbal Energetics

10am-1pm: Today, we will be exploring the energetics of herbal medicine from the traditional Western perspective. We’ll learn about the Greek humoural temperaments, the six tissue states and how to assess the energetics of plants based on their taste, phytochemistry, and effects on our physiology as well as looking at the practical application of plant energetics and human constitution within the respiratory system. This includes learning how to fit the correct herb to the various energetics of respiratory system pathologies. We will also be experimenting with oil infusions and salves specific for the respiratory system.

Herbs for the Ears, Eyes, Nose, Throat

2-5 pm: We’ll finish this weekend up looking at herbs for EENT issues such as sinus infection, earaches, and common eye conditions. Herbs will include Echinacea, Calendula, Plantain, Red Clover, and Bilberry. We’ll also head out to the garden for some plant ID.

You are welcome to join in for the weekend or a single day.
