The Nervous System

The true Body-Mind connection is most evident in the Nervous System. If we are what we eat, do we not become what we think? A well-functioning nervous system creates a calm mind and herbal tonics, adaptogens, relaxants and nervines have often paved the way for a ‘relaxed constitution’ and good night’s sleep. This month we will explore such specific herbal actions and corresponding herbs for the nervous system herbs, used for soothing anxiety, insomnia, headaches and the blues.

Saturday, November 2

10am-1pm: This weekend’s module begins with overview of Nervous System physiology and a look at herbs to balance the air element specific to the Nervous System.

2-5pm: We will then delve into the concept of herbal adaptogens reviewing such herbs as Holy Basil, Rhodiola, Astragalus, and Ginseng. We’ll also look at the conditions of headaches and migraines and specific herbs for treating them. The students will put together a herbal formula & perform taste testing.

Sunday, November 3

10am-1pm: Today we will be looking at an ‘Emotional First Aid Kit’ for Depression & Anxiety along with the classic Nervous System Materia Medica of St John's Wort, Kava, Mugwort, Lemon Balm, Passionflower as well as formulations of herbal blends.

2-5pm: This afternoon we will finish up the weekend looking at nervine and sedative herbs such as Valerian, Hops, Jamacian Dogwood, California Poppy and Scullcap as well as herbal blends for insomnia. We'll go on an herb walk to collect plants in the garden & neighborhood to press for your herbal ‘scrapbook’.

You are welcome to join in for the weekend or a single day.

Come and join our Foundations of Herbalism Certification through the Mid-Atlantic School of Herbalism at the Smile Herb Shop. This certification course is taught in executive format, one (1) weekend (Saturday & Sunday, 10 am-5 pm) each month (except August). Assignments and study between classes are required with some online content. A study group via web-conference is available once a month between classes. Classes are recorded, so if missed can be made up. The one-year program leads to a Foundations of Herbalism Certificate. For those who are interested in clinical practice, students can continue on for a second year of study to gain a Professional Herbalism Certification. This advanced course also consists of 1 weekend a month, over a period of 12 months with the final 6 months, being a clinical component. If both years are completed with accompanying assignments and case studies, students receive a Diploma of Clinical Therapeutic Herbalism.
