The Immune System
This weekend we’ll be looking at actions, herbs, protocols and recipes for Immune Self-Care including using herbs as food and a component of medicine making. We strive to give you a better understanding of the difference between acute and chronic disease processes and care as well as a basic capacity to apply the knowledge you develop for safe self-care and in-home use.
On Saturday June 3rd, the class will start with an Ayurvedic Immune perspective and a session on pulse diagnosis. Herbs with Immune Modulation actions will be covered including Astragalus, Reishi, Shiitake, Eleuthero, Rhodiola, Pau d’ Arco and Licorice. Herbal protocols for Environmental Illness, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Auto-immune conditions will be gone over and a batch of ‘immune soup’ will be prepared for all to share. Recipes for all prepared food will be supplied.
On Sunday June 4th, we will cover infectious medicine, concentrating on the herbal anti-microbial, anti-fungal and diaphoretic herbs for fever management. We’ll touch on the subjects of influenza, the common cold and insect-borne diseases such as Lyme. Our Immune Herbal Materia Medica will cover Echinacea, Elderberry & flower, Sweet Annie, Yarrow, Thyme, Oregano and Boneset and we’ll cook up some immune support Elderberry syrup and Garlic-Ginger Oxymel to keep the bugs at bay! A list of other immune boosting herbal recipes & protocols will also be given out.
Class is 9am-5pm on June 3rd & 4th.

The Foundations of Herbalism
This year our Professional Herbalism Classes through the Mid-Atlantic School of Herbalism at Smile are following a new format. They can be taken as a continuous year-long course leading on to the second year of the Professional Herbalism course or taken separately as a one day or weekend course for Continuing Education credit (AHG) or simply for interest’s sake.
The Professional Herbalist Program runs over the course of two and a half years (2½). At completion of the first year, students receive a Foundations of Herbalism Certificate. At completion of the second year, students received a Certificate of Advanced Herbal Studies. For those that are interested in clinical practice, there is also a 6 month clinical component. If all stages are completed, students receive a Diploma of Clinical Therapeutic Herbalism.
The course is in executive format consisting of 1 weekend a month over a period of 9 months (contained in 3 modules of 3 months each). Students can begin the course at the beginning of any of the modules as they are all self-contained. Study between classes is required.
Each of the 3 modules is $699 for a total of $ 2097.00 for each entire year. The clinical component is 2 modules of 3 months for a total of 6 months and is $800 per module. Any class payments can be paid in installments, if desired.
