The Digestive System
Herbalists say the Digestive System holds the key to health. The old saying ‘We Are What We Eat’ should be revised to ‘We are what we are able to assimilate!’ Good digestion depends on the smooth working of the alimentary tract from mouth & teeth down to the other end.
On Saturday May 6th, the class will begin with an introduction to the Ayurvedic Dosha ruled by fire, Pitta and correlating herbal actions. We will concentrate on issues concerning the stomach and intestines such as chronic heartburn, GERD, candida, intestinal dysbiosis, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, food intolerances or food allergies. Classic herbal remedies ranging from digestive bitters to relaxants, demulcents and carminatives such as such as Wormwood, Slippery Elm, Fennel, Marshmallow & Licorice will be covered as well as protocols for each condition. You will also learn to formulate teas for a number of digestive issues in this class.
On Sunday May 7th, the class will cover the topic of liver detoxification including a personalized herbal protocol for liver cleansing. Herbal Materia Medica will cover chologogues and choloretics such as Milk Thistle, Dandelion, Schizandra, Artichoke, Chicory and Burdock as well as examining protocols for gallbladder issues and hepatitis. A plant botany ID walk in the Smile Garden will be included.
Class is 9am-5pm on May 6th & 7th.

The Foundations of Herbalism
This year our Professional Herbalism Classes through the Mid-Atlantic School of Herbalism at Smile are following a new format. They can be taken as a continuous year-long course leading on to the second year of the Professional Herbalism course or taken separately as a one day or weekend course for Continuing Education credit (AHG) or simply for interest’s sake.
The Professional Herbalist Program runs over the course of two and a half years (2½). At completion of the first year, students receive a Foundations of Herbalism Certificate. At completion of the second year, students received a Certificate of Advanced Herbal Studies. For those that are interested in clinical practice, there is also a 6 month clinical component. If all stages are completed, students receive a Diploma of Clinical Therapeutic Herbalism.
The course is in executive format consisting of 1 weekend a month over a period of 9 months (contained in 3 modules of 3 months each). Students can begin the course at the beginning of any of the modules as they are all self-contained. Study between classes is required.
Each of the 3 modules is $699 for a total of $ 2097.00 for each entire year. The clinical component is 2 modules of 3 months for a total of 6 months and is $800 per module. Any class payments can be paid in installments, if desired.
