Cardiovascular System Herbs & Nutrition

Our cardiovascular system is one of the main transport system of the body, moving blood, which carries nutrients and oxygen to the tissues and removes waste. A healthy heart and circulatory system is said to be the secret of a long life. It is a fact that cardiovascular disease is one of the leading causes of morbidity & mortality in the US and thus we would consider the saying is absolutely true!

`10am-12:30 pm: Cardiovascular Physiology and Cardio Tonics

We will begin the class weekend with basic cardiovascular anatomy and physiology before jumping into the Materia Medica of flavonoid-rich Cardio Tonics such as Hawthorn, Bilberry, Blueberry, Cranberry, Hibiscus, Cactus grandifloris, Cardio-Nervines: Motherwort, Linden, Bugleweed and as well as using cardiovascular herbs energetically. The class will also cover include conditions such as cardiac arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat), tachycardia or bradycardia (fast or slow heartbeat), and angina. We will also cover strategies to protect your heart and cardiovascular system as you grow older.

1:30-3:30 pm: Cardiovascular Nutrition and Supplements

In the afternoon we will look at Cardio Anti-Spasmodics and Anti-Oxidants: Khella, Olive Leaf and Mistletoe & Cardio-Diuretic herbs such as Dandelion leaf, Parsley, Celery and herbs that support healthy cholesterol levels: Garlic, Artichoke, Guggal as well as supplements for heart health: Red Yeast Rice, Fish Oil, CoQ10, Niacin and Magnesium and heart healthy foods. We’ll also explore strategies to prevent or manage high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, and atherosclerosis.

Wednesday follow-up webinar, July 19th, 7 pm: Cardiovascular Materia Medica, Vascular Tonics

In this webinar, we will look at Circulatory Stimulants such as Prickly Ash, Ginkgo, Rosemary, Ginger, Cayenne and Venous Tonics; Horse Chestnut, Butcher’s Broom, Stoneroot and Buckwheat as well as some topicals, specific for ‘venous congestion’. Conditions covered will include varicose veins, hemorrhoids, portal circulation issues. You’ll finish the day off with some ‘heart support’ recipes.

The herbalists at the Mid-Atlantic School of Herbalism (MASH) have a combined experience of working with plant medicine of more than 100 years and we are passionate about sharing the wonders of herbal medicine with our students.

This certification course is currently taught online via Zoom and can be joined at any time during the year. It is run in executive format, with one (1) Saturday a month,10 am-12:30 pm, 1:30-3:30 pm (except August) with a follow-up 1 ½ hour webinar and study group after the weekend classes (on the 2nd Wed evening after the Saturday class at 7-8:30 pm). Assignments and study between classes are required for certification. Classes are recorded so they can be made up if missed. The one-year program runs for 11 months and can be joined at any time during the year as classes are taught on a revolving basis. Monthly Saturday and evening classes must be attended or made up and monthly assignments completed for the Foundations of Herbalism Certificate.

The cost for Foundations of Herbalism (FOH) Certificate: $199/month x 11 or $2,189 in total.
