Event description

Description

Botany & Plant ID Workshop

We at MASH believe that budding herbalists should be able to identify plants, particularly medicinal ones, in the wild or on city sidewalks. We will spend part of the day outside for this Saturday class, learning more about plant family characteristics and plant ID technique, the art of ‘keying out’ plants and ways of recognizing medicinal herbs in the wild. Handouts will be provided to assist in recognition of plant habitat, structure, distinctive parts (flowers, leaves, stems).

Please note: You may join us for the weekend or a single day.

Come and join our Foundations of Herbalism Certification through the Mid-Atlantic School of Herbalism at the Smile Herb Shop. This certification course is taught in executive format, one (1) weekend (Saturday & Sunday, 10 am-5 pm) each month (except August). Assignments and study between classes are required with some online content. A study group via web-conference is available once a month between classes. Classes are recorded, so if missed can be made up. The one-year program leads to a Foundations of Herbalism Certificate. For those who are interested in clinical practice, students can continue on for a second year of study to gain a Professional Herbalism Certification. This advanced course also consists of 1 weekend a month, over a period of 12 months with the final 6 months, being a clinical component. If both years are completed with accompanying assignments and case studies, students receive a Diploma of Clinical Therapeutic Herbalism.

We will spend the day outside for this Sunday class, wandering in the wild! reviewing our plant ID techniques learned last month, practicing ‘keying out’ plants in local woods and looking at practical ways of recognizing medicinal herbs. Bring a hand lens & handouts from last month’s class. This is one of the student’s favorite classes as we ‘go into the wild’ to see medical plants in their native habitat.
