In this beginner's workshop we will learn the foundational hand, which was devised by master penman and typographer Edward Johnston, in early 20th century England. Johnston based this broad-edge pen hand on 10th century Carolingian manuscript calligraphy. The foundational hand is an upright alphabet with a 30 degree pen angle. According to English-American master scribe Sheila Waters (b.1929) the foundational hand should be the first alphabet students' study.
All materials will be supplied. Feel free to bring in your favorite quote and/or project ideas for practice and discussion.
