A bit about Foundation Tracking Workshop here in sunny Dorset.

For complete beginners and those who have recently begun tracking. Useful for anyone who has struggled to progress in the early stages of tracking.

Your dog can already track! That's the good news. Therefore the emphasis in this workshop is on helping handlers join in with this form of sniffing fun without interupting what the dogs are doing. The hardest thing appears to be switching the locus of control from handler (as in usual training) to the dog (as in tracking) and keeping it there!! We just don’t want to let go and let those lovely dogs do their thing! Dogtaggs have lots of experience in helping people to do just that. Day one is taken up with learning how to handle the line and follow your dog whilst she or he is tracking. We will also teach you how to be an effective track layer (a lot of the secrets to success are in track laying skills)

The dogs are introduced to the tracks one at a time and continue through the workshop tracking on the field on their own. Anyone worrying about the presence of other dogs, please relax. Anyone concerned that their dog is nervous around people, read on. Candidates work in pairs. First as track layer for your workshop partner…… which means you are actually guiding the handler (we show you how) and then, secondly handling your own dog and being guided by your workshop partner (under our guidance). This means that the dogs get regular, significant breaks in vehicles…… It is advantageous if dogs are comfortable being settled in your vehicle. We have shaded parking.

On day two we introduce corners, which is no big deal to dogs, but a huge deal to us. So, we spend a bit of time making sure everyone has a range of techniques that you can use to successfully follow your dog around bends and shapes in the track. Great fun! You will be surprised at how hard your body will wok to try to stop you following your dog and how much laughter is involved and how exhilarating it is when you crack it.

We talk about the applications of tracking, what it is, how it works and why its important to dogs. We eat a lot of cake and we have a lot of fun. There is a lot of walking. Sometimes in grotty weather. New toilet and kitchen facilities on site, tea/coffee available all day, large building to shelter in, loads of space for dogs that struggle around others. If your dog is a little shy or nervous around unknown people please let us know and we will help you and your dog participate fully. We have lots of experience of helping dogs to feel much more relaxed around people, we have gentle techniques for involving these individuals, they will never be forced or frightened.

Equipment needed. A V neck harness, long line (comfortable, we hope to get dogs pulling consistently, but comfortably), loads of small, soft treats, small toys, water bowls, dog towels. Lunch each day for yourself and all weather clothing. We have a limited number of harnesses and lines for hire. 'Hire a Harness' service fee is £5, just book it on your form.

We recommend the Happy Dog harness and the Clix 10m recall line.
