Event Details

FOT-Net is arranging its 11th international workshop in conjunction with the ITS World Congress. FOT-Net was established in 2008 as a European Commission’s support action with the mission to create a networking platform for stakeholders interested in Field Operational Tests (FOTs). FOT-Net has tackled common working issues and fostered cross-region cooperation. The three regions (Europe, Asia-Pacific and North America) cooperate on common FOT and pilot issues, such as data handling and sharing, methodology and deployment.

The European project CARTRE operates the network activities during 2017–2018. With CARTRE focus on automation, the 11th international workshop will discuss how to further develop the knowledge base and data handling and sharing to suit connected automated vehicle pilots.

Objectives of the workshop

This workshop aims to facilitate exchange of information on experiences from automation pilots and data sharing between the three regions.

In recent years a number of automation pilots have been conducted. These pilots have answered questions about how automated vehicles function in real traffic conditions and how they are perceived by the users. Automation brings a need for new testing methodology and an enhanced need for data sharing. Will artificial intelligence need for training data be the key to enhanced data sharing?

The topics we want to address in this workshop are:

  • Policy and funding to promote data provision
  • Automation impact – what data is needed to find the answers
  • Sharing of knowledge base

In the workshop we will have presentations on the topics from the three regions. Selected data sharing success stories together with the lessons learned and the CARTRE data sharing strategy will be presented. There will also be discussions in small groups addressing the topics and exploring potential solutions.

The conclusions from the workshop will be documented in a CARTRE deliverable and made available at the end of the project. The result will be utilised in the new European coordination project ARCADE, starting in October 2018.

Invited participants

People active in data management and sharing, people performing FOTs and pilots, decision makers in private and public organisations, data experts and transport researchers. We strongly encourage the participants to bring their own questions and experiences.

CARTRE is a Coordination and Support Action to accelerate development and deployment of automated road transport by increasing market and policy certainties. To achieve this, CARTRE will support the development of clearer and more consistent policies for EU Member States in collaboration with industry players, ensuring that automated road transport systems and services are compatible at EU level and are deployed in a coherent way.

Other objectives include: the creation of a solid knowledgebase of all European activities, to support current activities and structure research outcomes by enablers and thematic areas; to setup a platform for sharing and re-using data and experiences from different automated road transport systems; to actively support Field Operational Tests (FOTs) and pilots carried out at National and European levels; and to work on future visions, potential impacts and research gaps in the deployment of automated road transport.

The CARTRE project will run for two years and aims to establish a joint stakeholders forum in order to coordinate and harmonise automated road transport approaches at European (e.g. strategic alignment of national action plans for automated driving) and international level (in particular with the US and Japan). Towards this objective, CARTRE has organised the first European CAD conference in 2017 and is open to associated partners beyond the confinements of the consortium.
