Fostering Sustainable Behavior: Community-Based Social Marketing with Doug McKenzie-Mohr

A three-day comprehensive workshop, May 21-23, 2012 on the University of Colorado, Boulder campus.

About this Workshop: The cornerstone of sustainability is behavior change because sustainability requires individuals and businesses to act, (e.g. reduce waste, recycle, improve energy and water use efficiency, change transportation modes, etc). To date, most programs have relied on disseminating information to acheive these changes. Research demonstrates, however, that simply providing information has little to no effect on what people or businesses do. But if not ads, booklets and brochures, then what? Over the last decade, a new approach - community-based social marketing - has emerged as an effective alternative for promoting sustainable behavior. We invite you to attend this three day workshop with the founder of Community-Based Social Marketing, Dr. McKenzie-Mohr as this training will fundamentally change the way you think about program delivery.

Who Should Attend:  Those who design and/or fund programs to encourage individuals and businesses to engage in sustainability-based behaviors - such as energy and water efficiency, waste reduction, transportation mode changes, purchasing, and more -  will find this in-depth, comprehensive workshop beneficial. The workshop is also applicable and helpful for those involved in environmental education, such as staff at zoos, aquariums, and wilderness programs. Public health professionals who work to foster active and health lifestyles which require behavioral change will also benefit from attending this workshop.

•  Introductory Workshop (attendance at this workshop, or an earlier McKenzie-Mohr introductory workshop, is required for the Advanced).
Monday, May 21 from 9 am to 5 pm.

 > This one day introductory workshop provides a comprehensive introduction to community based social marketing and how it is being applied throughout the world to foster sustainable behavior. Those who attend the introductory workshop will learn the five steps of community-based social marketing - selecting behaviors, identifying barriers and benefits, developing strategies, developing a pilot and broad scale implementation - and be exposed to numerous case studies illustrating its use.

All materials, refreshments and lunch are included in the workshop price.

Advanced 2 day Workshop - Tuesday, May 22 - Wednesday, May 23 from 9 am to 5 pm

> The two day advanced workshop provides an in-depth exploration of how community-based social marketing can be used to foster sustainable behavior. This workshop will introduce leading-edge material on selecting behaviors, identifying barriers and benefits (including market segmentation), applying behavior change tools (including some exciting new developments regarding the use of commitments, norms and social diffusion), and piloting programs. Further, participants will also be coached in making community-based social marketing presentations to their agency or community and will receive Powerpoint and Keynote presentations for this purpose.

All materials, refreshments and lunch are included in the workshop price.

About Dr. McKenzie-Mohr: For over two decades Dr. McKenzie-Mohr has been working to incorporate scientific knowledge on behavior change into the design and delivery of community programs. He is the founder of community-based social marketing and the author of three books on the topic. One of these books "Fostering Sustainable Behavior: An Introduction to Community-Based Social Marketing" has been recommended by Time magazine and become requisite reading for those who deliver programs to promote sustainable behavior.

Dr. McKenzie-Mohr has worked internationally with a diverse array of governmental and non-governmental agencies, assisting them in identifying barriers to behavior change and in developing and evaluating community-based social marketing initiatives to overcome these barriers.  He is a former professor of psychology at St. Thomas University in New Brunswick, Canada where he coordinated the Environment and Society program.
