Description

AVALANCHE COMPANION RESCUE: A TEAM RESPONSIBILITY

FOSJ is excited to announce this special rescue clinic with Leo Lloyd. Leo is the technical rescue advisor for the San Juan County Search and Rescue Team, an instructor for the Silverton Avalanche School, and an EMS Captain/Firefighter with Durango Fire & Rescue. He has extensive wilderness and backcountry medical experience and has been on some of the most dramatic rescue missions in the San Juans.

In this field based training, we will explore and reinforce strategies in decision-making, planning, preparation, and “hands on” practice in implementing an effective small team avalanche rescue plan in the event of an avalanche accident. This course is ideal for the recreational winter backcountry user and will include realistic “scenario based” post-burial problem solving. This field clinic is a great follow up/supplement to FOSJ's On-Snow Sessions!

Equipment Needed For Field Session:

  • Avalanche rescue gear (transceiver/probe/shovel)

  • Each participant will need to have the ability to move over snow a short distance. Backcountry skis/split-boards (with skins) or snowshoes are required

  • Have in your pack what you would consider taking on a ½ day tour in the mountains

All participants must complete, sign and bring FOSJ Liability Waiver. Waiver can be found here: http://www.thesanjuans.org/fosj-waiver-2/

Course will take place at the Andrews Lake parking lot just south of Molas Pass on US 550. Please arrive early and be geared up and ready to go by 9:00am. Course will conclude at 2:00pm.

Mark your calendars, get registered, and we look forward to seeing you!
