About this event

Pasadena Photography Arts Presents | "GAUDI AND THE 'GAUDY' GAUDI" with Derek Goldberg

Join us January 25th for a photographic presentation exploring and comparing the relative architectural achievements of Antoni Gaudi and Friedensreich Hundertwasser. While the former needs little introduction given his well-accepted place in the pantheon of modern architecture giants, the latter has often been unfairly or jokingly referred to as the "Gaudy Gaudi." Nonetheless, a serious comparison between the two is well merited, if not called for, largely due to their similar holistic approaches to architecture as a whole, and more specifically the architectural themes they each championed, which shared a common reliance on organic styles inspired by natural forms.

It is Hundertwasser's use of very brash, saturated, almost cartoonish, colors that is probably most responsible for the use by some of the "gaudy" descriptor. And while funny, it is also a bit flippant and does not do justice to his incredibly vibrant and original architectural vision. In many ways, Hundertwasser can lay claim to being the natural artistic descendent of Gaudi, especially through his Modernist emphasis on the use natural, organic, and asymmetric forms. As for color, it may be said, I think, that he just takes it to the next step into the realm of Expressionism.
