An exclusive evening filled with music and community on Saturday, May 25th (5PM), featuring special recorded performances of some of our favorite artists.

Makena Hartlin is a young vocalist and songwriter born and raised in the Chicago area. Being from a non-musical family, she taught herself guitar and piano at age 17 and immediately began writing original music. By age 19, she had already formed a band and began opening for national touring country acts. As her experiences grew and tastes developed, she began incorporating influences of jazz, pop, and R&B into her songwriting.

She is known for her captivating and intimate vocals, and a “heart-on-her-sleeve” lyrical style. Makena is planning to release her debut album produced by the renowned Neil Kernon this year.


BRANDON MARKELL HOLMES

Grammy-nominated singer, actor, writer, multi-media artist; Brandon Markell Holmes is a formally trained theatre actor who curates common ground in creative storytelling and abstract exposition.

His work themes are reflective of social observations and the symbiotic relationship between art & and history. Brandon's premiere works include a visual EP entitled, Inertia, featured in Afropunk, Art's Incubator with The University of Chicago, and in conjunction with OpenTV Beta at North Western University, as well as a collaboration with international recording artist The Gorillaz on "Circle of Friendz" off their 2017 album, Humanz. Which led to a Grammy nomination for best alternative album in 2018.

Brandon's song-writing has also achieved claim after "You Won't," produced by Bobby Wooten and Andre Danek, was picked up for FOX's Empire, season 4 episode 5, featuring Jussie Smollett.

Brandon was a 2018 featured artist at Chicago ideas week in addition to a 5 day residency at The Museum Of Contemporary Art spring 2019. Brandon debut album “The Museum of R & B” is schedule for release Febuary 2019.


JACKSON SHEPARD

Jackson Shepard is a guitarist based in Chicago, IL. He is a graduate of Columbia College Chicago, where he made most of his connections. Most of his projects or performances are in a neo soul/jazz style, but Shepard also incorporates folk, electronic music, and world music into his repertoire.

His primary project is Human Bloom, where he composes, produces, and arranges the music along with vocalist Imani Rouselle. Their latest release is “Capillary”, a single available on all streaming platforms (with a live version found on our YouTube channel).

Growing up in Hartland, Wisconsin, Shepard was also a regular of the Milwaukee music scene. He attended and performed at many DIY shows, and studied jazz through MYSO, the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra.

Since he’s moved to Chicago, he’s worked with other artists including Maurice Brown, Braxton Cook, The Burns Twins, Makaya McCraven, Brittany Campbell, Melanie Faye, Sam Trump, Anna Agosta, Charlie Coffeen, Femdot, Brandon Markell Holmes, Illville Vanguard, Michon Young, and is soon to take over the guitar throne for Adam Ness.
