Event description

Description

Workshop One - Saturday 24 November 10am - 14:30pm*

Workshop Two - Saturday 1 December 10am - 13:00pm*

We are inviting secondary school students from across the borough to enter into our Forging the Future Competition to have a say in the future of Milton Keynes. Students will have the opportunity to deal with important case studies that will be crucial to the development of the city.

The competition and workshops will span three days over November/December and will give attendees the chance to meet project leads and senior council staff who are at the forefront of their field nationally. It will be a great addition on UCAS applications and CVs for those entering as they will be able to develop an array of skills such as public speaking, team working and problem solving. Every member of the winning team will also win £50 worth of shopping vouchers for the Centre:MK.

These sessions will allow the students to learn about what the future of MK holds first hand from our Director of Strategy and Futures Geoff Snelson. This will be followed by workshops that will allow students to get their teeth into some policy writing for scenarios that will become pressing for MK as the city continues to grow over the coming decades. The teams will discuss and plan solutions for these issues with our policy leads. The issues we will be focusing on are:

Mobility in MK – How will we get around the city in the future?

Place-making, housing and communities – What will neighbourhoods look like in the future and how do we build healthy, sustainable communities?

CMK/City centre – How do we make a city centre fit for the future?

This will form the basis for the design competition that will be held at the third event:

Thursday 13th December (18:00-19:30) @ MK Gallery CMK* - see the following link to be posted shortly...

This final event will be where teams come together for an exhibition of their policy solutions that they prepared in the previous sessions. They will present these to our MK Futures Judging Panel and also to the student’s friends and family who will also be welcome. Teams will need to show how their submissions meet the judging criteria, demonstrating how their ideas are innovative, viable and practical with the panel awarding the prizes to the winning team.

*To qualify for the prizes attendees need to attend all three events.
