The Nanjing Massacre was one of the darkest times in Chinese history. Within six weeks, 300,000 out of 600,000 civilians and soldiers in the city of Nanjing were murdered. Tens of thousands of women and children were brutally raped.
This play is about Minnie Vautrin, the President of Ginling College, the first Chinese university to grant bachelor's degrees to female students. An ordinary woman from rural Illinois, and the daughter of hardworking French immigrants, she not only saved lives during the massacre, but also served in China for 28 years, empowering women through education. Vautrin harbored upwards of 10,000 women and children on the Ginling campus during the Japanese invasion of Nanjing.
