The California Society of American Foresters invite you to participate in the Forestry Institute for Teachers (FIT) professional development program. This is our 28th year of the providing FIT to California educators!

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, only the Shasta County session at Camp McCumber is available in 2021 and space will be limited. To ensure the safety of your educator colleagues, participants are STRONGLY ENCOURAGED to acquire the COVID-19 vaccination although it is not a requirement.

As part of this year's safety protocol (here) we are asking all participants to follow the FIT Safety Protocol in compliance with Center for Disease Control (CDC) and local Health and Human Services Agency guidelines. If you have any questions please send email to rpsatomi "at" ucanr.edu.

NOTE: To help us make this program as safe as possible, RV, tent trailer, and pitch tent camping spots are being made available this year. Participants are encouraged to bring their own outdoor accommodations if interested. Additionally, please notify us if you are registering as part of a Team with other educators from your school. Come on your own or as a TEAM! If you register as a Team the team leader sets up the Team with a Team Name (school name for example) and then other team members select from the list of team names.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you have a question that is not addressed below, then please send email to forestryinstitute "at" gmail.com.

When do I find out if I've been accepted to attend?

Registrants are evaluated on an ongoing basis. In normal circumstances it takes approximately four weeks for the session to fill. This year is different with the ability to accomodate only 21 participants at 1 location rather than 120 participants at 4 locations. Due to COVID-19, processing time may be longer. Participants who wish to withdraw must do so by June 20, 2021.

What is the refund policy?

The Eventbrite page states "No Refunds", which is not correct. A partial refund of $25 will be given to those that withdraw prior to June 20. There will be no refund for those that fail to show up at the session. The intent of the registration fee is to reduce the >30% withdrawal rate. The registration funds are used to support about 5 participants each year.

Can I attend FIT again?

FIT is free to first time participants, though they must cover their personal travel costs to the session location. Past FIT participants may repeat if they pay the participation cost of $800.

Is FIT just for California teachers?

Yes, FIT is for California teachers because the funding is from California sources and each of the sessions are forest ecosystem specific. FIT-like programs are offered in other states.

Is FIT aligned to Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)?

Yes. The FIT education staff are all trained in NGSS. They are trained facilitators in Project Learning Tree and Project WET, as well. A goal of FIT is to model NGSS and environmental education curriculum development and implementation.

How many professional development hours can I obtain?

Those who complete FIT can obtain 3 Professional Development Academic Credits through UC Davis Extension at a cost of $200. Application for credits occurs either during or after the session is completed depending on the session.
