Forest & Wild Food Walk on Opus 40 trails with Mallory O'Donnell

About this Event

Forest & Wild Food Walk at Opus 40

The woods around the Opus 40 site contain a beautiful and typical mix of Northeastern trees with a variety that shows off many different mini-ecologies of our local woodland. Most of these trees provide shelter and food for wildlife, as well as overlooked edible foods for human beings. On our walk, we will discuss the hitherto seldom explored edible uses of the deep woods trees, as well as looking for edible plants and mushrooms that we might encounter along the way. We will also discuss some of the broader aspects of wild food that are often ignored by popular literature and trendy foraging blogs and websites, including the ethical and sustainability issues raised by foraging. This walk will last one and a half to two hours, taking in the open spaces of the park as well as the deeper woods. There will be time afterwards for a question and answer period, and a light snack made with wild ingredients.

******

Mallory O’Donnell is a wild food gatherer, grower, cook and writer focused on the ethical and sustainable use of indigenous edible and medicinal plants and invasive wild edibles. As general manager of a small landscaping company, Mallory spends a great deal of time working with edible weeds and introduced plants, as well as ornamental plants with potential food use. Mallory is currently working on a book of wild food cucina povera–featuring traditional working-class ethnic dishes from around the world, as well as ancient preservation methods (such as fermentation, pickling, vinegar-making, dehydration, etc). Recipes, articles and selections from this ongoing work are published in blog form (How to Cook a Weed). Numerous culinary ideas, studies of trees and wild plants, wild edible mushrooms and works in progress are featured via a regularly-updated Instagram page (@mallorylodonnell). Mallory also conducts educational walks, wild food events and instructive “talk and taste” events, updated regularly via a mailing list–email mallory.odonnell@gmail.com to be included on this list.
