Ford UX: Engineering Meets Design Thinnking

Learn how a merger of mindsets between designers and engineers come together and collaborate to create something more than just a form of transportation – where the fusion of science and creativity translate the language of user experience into the latest automotive designs at Ford. Our featured speakers are Sandy Fershee, Global Manager Ford UX and James Forbes, Technical Leader, Interaction and Ergonomics Attributes. Marc Greuther, Chief Curator will moderate this discussion.

This conversation is part of Detroit Design Festival Week 2017 – come celebrate the future of design thinking.

Program admission is free for up to 150 Detroit Design Festival Week attendees with this EventBrite ticket; free for Members of The Henry Ford; and included with paid daily Museum ticketed admission. This talk will be held inside Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation, please enter via the Welcome Center or Clocktower entrances to the Museum.

Sandy Fershee, Global Manager, User Experience
Sandy leads Ford’s Global User Experience team. Since its inception two years ago, she has designed and built the organization – the teams, roles and practices – led key projects and initiatives to envision holistic experiences for future customers and businesses ongoing success -- and created and facilitated User Experience / Human Centered Design training that has reached 1000 global leaders in Ford’s Product Development organization. She passionately embraces and practices Ford’s mission to make people’s lives better – both at work and in the world.

Over her career, Sandy has worked with the world's leading organizations: automotive companies, device manufacturers, wireless carriers, news and media organizations -- designing everything from operating systems and messaging solutions to education, healthcare, vehicle, media and entertainment experiences.

Past clients and collaborators have included: Google, Ford, Johnson & Johnson, Motorola, AT&T, Infiniti, Samsung, Amplify, BBH Zag, CNN, Co Collective, Disney, Punchcut, and Razorfish.

James Forbes, Technical Leader / Department Manager, Interaction and Ergonomics Attribute
James has over twenty-five years of automotive engineering experience delivering vehicle attributes globally. He currently leads delivery of a new, integrated HMI and Ergonomics attribute in both the digital and physical domains -- assuring world class user interfaces for global products.

A licensed Professional Engineer, he has BS and MS degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. His current responsibilities include the implementation of UX content and delivery of the Interaction and Ergonomics attribute for North American programs along with global core attribute ownership. He has published numerous technical papers, holds three US Patents, and is a 2015 recipient the Henry Ford Technology Award.

Earlier in his career at Ford, James developed and operated virtual reality and human factors laboratories to support product development, and worked cross-brand and cross-region, to develop vehicle concepts suitable for the global marketplace.

Marc Greuther, Chief Curator, Curator of Industry & Design, & Senior Director of Historical Resources
Marc has worked at The Henry Ford for 27 years. As Curator of Industry and Design, he has broadened and deepened the institution's technology, innovation, and design holdings; as Chief Curator he leads the curatorial team and the development of curatorial strategy.
