Event description

Description

Join Interpretek as we welcome Amber Galloway Gallego to Kansas City for this unique skills-building opportunity. Note: scroll for FAQs, updated on 4/17.

CEUs: 0.3 RID Professional Studies CEUs*

Audience: student through professional working interpreter, hearing or deaf

This onsite workshop is designed to educate interpreters about certain areas of language that are sometimes thought of as taboo. Ways to use appropriate sex vocabulary is not taught or often seen unless you are a part of this tight knit community and culture. The workshop will explore this linguistic subset of English and ASL.

Participants will:

  • Get acquainted with explicit signs used in the Deaf community, then match them with appropriate English in various registers
  • Practice adopting register and language choices to different interpreting settings
  • Learn and apply explicit language used in the general Deaf community
  • Learn and apply explicit language used in minority Deaf communities

Interpretek is an approved RID sponsor for continuing education activities. This workshop has been approved for 0.3 Professional Studies CEUs and is designed for interpreter/interpreting student audiences with little or no prior knowledge of the subject. *Note: RID CEUs are accepted by both the Missouri and Kansas Commissions for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

FAQs - updated 4/17

I see this workshop is sold out; what do I do now?

Based on the room size, registration for Friday's workshop is limited to 65 people. Please join the waitlist by clicking the green "REGISTER" button at the top of the page, then select "JOIN WAITLIST". If current attendees back out, the system will send an email to the first person on the list, who has 12 hours to register. Please do join the waitlist if you're interested; we've been offering space since April 13 and there's a chance you could still get a seat.

**Note: we have a larger room for Saturday's workshop so there is no limit for that one. Register at https://ambermusicinterpretek.eventbrite.com.**

Who is Amber Galloway Gallego?

Check out Amber's bio.

In what language will the workshops be presented? How do I request accommodations?

This workshop will be presented in ASL. "Quiet" voice interpretation will be available through a limited number of FM devices. If you'd like a device, email kc.office@interpretek.com asap so we can set one aside for you.

What is Knuckleheads Saloon?

Knuckleheads is Kansas City's premier venue for live music, including blues, rock and roll, country, folk, Americana, pop, and bluegrass. We thought it would make a great place to host given our workshop topics.

Knuckleheads is just north of downtown Kansas City in an industrial neighborhood in a sprawling collection of buildings. Friday's workshop will take place in The Gospel Lounge; Saturday's will take place in The Garage. We'll have signage and staff on hand to help you find us. Learn more at Knuckleheads at www.knuckleheadskc.com.

What about food and drink?

Friday night, plan on eating before you arrive. You may bring a drink into the workshop.

I'm coming in from out of town. Where should I stay?

Check out www.visitkc.com for links to local hotels. We suggest searching near Downtown, the Country Club Plaza, and Crown Center. Since we anticipate most attendees will be local, we do not have a hotel designated with a room block.

What's the refund policy?

The final refund period ended April 14.

How will I get more details about the event?

You will receive an auto-generated email from Eventbrite with a receipt of payment. Interpretek will email additional details in the weeks leading up to the event.

How can I contact the organizer with any questions?

Email us at kc.office@interpretek.com anytime or call us during business hours at 816.246.8770 (toll free 866.372.1773). Messages left after hours will be returned the next business day.
