TITLE: For What it’s Worth: Valuation Concepts for Early Stage Companies

OVERVIEW: The presentation will focus on providing attendees with an overview of business valuation fundamentals. Stout will provide an overview of the topic by focusing on the valuation process, relevant valuation standards, and intellectual property valuation “fundamentals” such as the purpose of the valuation, standard of value and valuation date. Stout will also discuss the valuation nuances in the context of early stage companies seeking to raise money from venture capital firms, and issues with ‘traditional’ valuation approaches as it relates to these types of companies. Finally, Stout will provide attendees with an overview of commonly used valuation and venture capital terminology.

SPEAKER BACKGROUND:

Brian Potter is a Managing Director in the Dispute Consulting group and head of the firm’s Chicago office. Mr. Potter has provided valuation, litigation advisory, and forensic accounting services for numerous purposes, including marital dissolutions, shareholder disputes, estate and gift taxation, purchase price allocation, Employee Stock Ownership Plans, brokerage fraud, bankruptcy, potential transactions and intellectual property valuations.


Jordan Salins is a Senior Analyst in the Dispute Consulting group in Chicago. Mr. Salins provides valuation, M&A, transaction advisory, and strategic consulting services to companies related to intellectual property. Mr. Salins also provides damages calculations on intellectual property related litigation matters.
