Event description

Description

Christopher Tye (c. 1505 – c. 1572/3)

Missa Euge bone a6, Anthems, and Antiphons

Pre-Concert Lecture 7 pm

In keeping with our 25-year commitment to the reintroduction of lesser-known composers, Polyhymnia second concert will highlight Tudor composer Christopher Tye. Often mentioned with the other “T’s” of English music, Tallis and Taverner, he remains an enigmatic figure, more familiar to church musicians than to concert audiences. Like Tallis, he worked during the reigns of four Tudor monarchs, both Catholic and Protestant. He was a gentleman of the Chapel Royal, choirmaster at Ely Cathedral, and an Anglican priest. From his elaborate and penitent seven-voice Peccavimus cum patribus nostris, to the joyful exuberance of his most famous work, the Missa Euge bone, and his equally compelling English anthems, Tye will surprise and delight the listener with his eccentric yet brilliant compositions for the English church.
