Description

Beyond Self-Care & Work-Life Balance: Compassion Fatigue, Burnout and Moral Injury for Socially Conscious Helping Professionals

Empathetically assisting others through their stress, pain, trauma and suffering is central to much of the work of helping professionals. This caring makes burnout, vicarious trauma, and compassion and empathy fatigue all too common "occupational hazards" for social service, mental health, medical and educational service providers. Additionally, too often, this pain and suffering is caused by other humans or systemic oppression and injustice - which add moral injury and trauma grief to our compassion fatigue.

As socially conscious helpers doing this challenging work while also existing within these current social-political realities, our propensity for our own Political Trauma Stress Anxiety and Oppression Fatigue is magnified.

Learn the differences between vicarious trauma, compassion and empathy fatigue, oppression fatigue, and moral injury. How are they occupational hazards?

What does brain science teach us about how to not be stressed out by our stressors?

Do assessments of your own susceptibility and symptoms.

How does our savior complex perpetuate burnout?

Learn sustainable concrete personal and professional self-care & work-life-YOU balance strategies to build resilience. It's much more than baths and apps.

This workshop will explore each of these dynamics and will provide concrete and sustainable personal and professional workplace strategies.

~ Assess your current levels of stress, burnout, vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue and moral injury. And resiliency. (Assessment tools provided.)

~ Explore the concept of moral injury as it relates to working with trauma and suffering that is caused by systematic oppression, abuse, and injustice. Discuss the toll that it takes on us to help humans who have endured pain and suffering from other humans and systems of oppression.
~ Discuss the causes, differences and signs of burnout, vicarious trauma, trauma grief, oppression fatigue, and empathy and compassion fatigue
~ Explore how our liberal well-intentioned "helping" and "fix it" approaches or unchecked privilege can increase our burnout symptoms and put us in professional ethical jeopardy
~ Name the powerlessness and disheartenment that comes with the magnitude of the systemic causes of our moral injury and how to increase self-compassion and changes that make a difference
~ Learn 5 proactive strategies that your workplace and you can incorporate to reduce burnout and increase resiliency
~ Learn 6 proven steps to healing and recovery from burnout, vicarious trauma and compassion fatigue
~ Explore the brain science behind how work and personal stressors impact us and learn simple immediate life-changing mindful-based solutions
~ Review and assess your current work and home self-care habits and proven strategies to make meaningful wellness changes.
Create your own personal and professional Sustainable Self-care and Wellness Plan. (These ideas and methods are specifically geared towards helping professionals.)
