WORKSHOP: For energy efficient and HFC-free domestic, commercial and retail refrigeration in Article 5 countriesWednesday April 15, 2020

As part of the Montreal Protocol of phasing out substances that deplete the ozone layer, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) has for years been supporting member countries phase-out the use of ozone depleting and global warming substances in the cooling sector. The amendment to the Montreal Protocol in 2016 in Kigali, Rwanda led to the creation of the Kigali Cooling Efficiency Program (K-CEP) which is supported by 18 foundations and individual donors contributing to help increase the energy efficiency (EE) of cooling in developing countries. K-CEP is funding UNIDO’s project of “Assessment of incremental capital and operating costs for improved EE in domestic, commercial and retail refrigeration”.

This workshop will present the outcomes of projects undertaking by UNIDO, IIR and ICA.

AGENDA

13:00 Welcome Introduction (ICCC)

13:05 Welcome introduction (UNIDO)

13:10 Presentation of the K-CEP initiative (UNIDO)

13:20 “Assessment of incremental capital and operating costs for improved EE in domestic, commercial and retail refrigeration” (Omar Adelaziz, ICA)

14:20 “For energy efficient retail refrigeration in article 5 countries” (IIR)

14:50 “What barriers to overcome in order spread energy efficient refrigeration systems with low global warming potential" (IIR)

15:20 Coffee break

15:40 Workshop: Cost guidelines for energy efficient refrigeration, hands-on training for the development of cost-efficiency trade-off (ICA)

18:15 Conclusion (UNIDO)

18:30 End

The hands-on training on using CERA would involve some of the best practices regarding the inputs and how to develop proper estimates for unknown inputs. The outcomes of the survey on the different refrigeration technologies using non-CFC or HFC refrigerants, especially in the retail sector.

The objective was to identify, hierarchise and overcome the different barriers in order spread energy efficient refrigeration systems with low global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants in emerging economies.

The 6th IIR International Conference on Sustainability and the Cold Chain (ICCC2020)

The ICCC conference is a biennial event supported by the International Institute of Refrigeration. The last editions have been held in Cambridge (UK, 2010), Paris (France, 2013), London (UK, 2014), Auckland (New Zealand, 2016) and Beijing (China, 2018).

It is recognized worldwide as a cutting-edge event regarding the cold chain which addresses the ever-increasing demand of knowledge-sharing in sectors like refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pumps. It attracts on average 180 conference delegates

This international audience of researchers and industrialists, bringing together all cold chain stakeholders, will expose their latest developments and key technology trends on food and pharmaceuticals products throughout the old chain and as well as their other applications

For this edition, ICCC2020 will highlight the following topics:

  • Food quality and food safety in the cold chain
  • Refrigeration and health
  • Energy efficiency in the cold chain
  • Storage, transport and logistics
  • Innovation in eco-design of equipment
  • Refrigerants of tomorrow and containment
  • Modeling and prediction tools for optimizing the cold chain
  • Innovative technologies in the cold chain
  • Innovation in domestic, commercial and distribution refrigeration

Please note: Transport and accommodation costs are not covered by local and international organisations.
