Footprints Jazz Workshop with Hannabiell Sanders
As part of our new Footprints Development Programme, Footprints Jazz Club are running a workshop series on developing music improvisation and play skills.
This Autumn, we'll be working with 3 renowned musicians with specialties in different genres within the broad and wonderful world of jazz.
Our workshop will run from 6:15pm-8pm, followed by our usual jam night (open to all) from 8:30pm-late.
WE KNOW OUR WORKSHOPS WILL BECOME FULL VERY QUICKLY, so please only sign up if you are really serious about coming. Only apply for a free ticket if you cannot afford to pay for the refundable deposit ticket. And tell us immediately if you can no longer attend, so that we can give the space to someone else.
WORKSHOP #3: HANNABIELL SANDERS
Dr. G Hannabiell Sanders is a charismatic multi-instrumentalist, composer, and activist. Her music ignites audiences with a vibrant fusion of brass, African and Latin percussion, and improvisation. As founder of Ladies of Midnight Blue and Hannabiell & Midnight Blue, she uses music to break barriers, foster unity, and inspire social change. Her performances are immersive celebrations of rhythm and identity, blending storytelling and activism. Hannabiell is the Artistic Director of Harambee Pasadia CIC, where she champions collaboration and empowerment through innovative, community-focused programs.
WORKSHOP DETAILS:
6:15pm arrival, starting 6:30pm sharp.
Run until 8pm, with a short break in the middle.
8:30pm til late - open jam for everyone (including non-attendees of the workshop).
Improvisation and Rhythmic Conversations with Hannabiell Sanders
Join Hannabiell for an inspiring improvisation workshop. Step inside her creative world, where rhythm dances with collaboration, melodies spark musical conversation, and music becomes a voice for freedom, protest, and social justice. Explore call-and-response, group improvisation, dynamics of participation and improvisation through Afro-Latin grooves. Bring your instrument, your ideas, and your energy, and play alongside other musicians in a space designed to experiment, connect, and push your musical creativity.
CAPACITY:
There will be up to 30 people who can play and participate in the workshop, and space for 30 people to come as a spectator, so that we can share Hannabiell's wisdom with as many as we can!
ABILITY LEVELS:
You may find this workshop tricky if you're a complete beginner at playing music; we're catering more to those who are wanting to develop any existing experience they have playing and/or improvising.
INSTRUMENTS:
We will provide a kit, keyboard, full PA with mics, guitar and bass guitar. Otherwise please bring your own instrument. Guitar players will benefit from bringing their own guitars.
WE ESPECIALLY WELCOME:
People with a particular interest in blending and improvising within Afro-Latin genres. People who don't get a lot of opportunity to be in an inclusive environment that praises listening, sharing space, and curiosity in people's playing. This can include women and minority genders, but also anyone who's felt too shy to express themselves beyond their bedroom playing!
VENUE ACCESS:
Alder is wheelchair accessible, and the workshop space can cater to players offstage on the floor.
There is also a bar area and seating area outside the workshop room where people can chill out if they need a minute.
