Description
Location: Meet at the UBC Macmillan Orchard Garden - West side of the Macmillan Building, Faculty of Land and Food Systems, UBC. Click here to view map.
What to bring: Fine black felt pens (fine and thick), Green felt markers (preferably: Promarker: forest green, meadow green and warm grey number three); calculator; and some good creative energy. I'll bring the tracing paper planning guideline hand-outs and maps for the design exercise.
When to come: 2:30pm sharp. You may miss us if you arrive late. We''ll start outside in the garden but will be inside for most of the afternoon.
Prerequisites: None. We welcome anyone interested in food - that should be most fo us. There are no requirements with regards to gardening skills, drawing skills or otherwise. We'll take care of that during the workshop.
How much land does it take to feed Vancouver?
Could Vancouver produce all it's own food? What would that look (and taste) like?
What should I plant? How much will it produce? How much compost will I need to replace lost nutrients? How can I communicate an agricultural plan to others and document the process for future land stewards?
In this interactive and design-focused workshop, we'll explore food security at a global, regional, local and farm scale, considering the production capacity of each. We'll speak to the issues surrounding food system energy inputs and outputs, and empower participants with planning and communication skills to do something about it in their community, on their farm, in their back yard or on their patio.
About the Facilitator:
James Richardson, Victoria University of Wellington, School of Architecture and Design 
James is studying community resilience planning at Victoria University of Wellington where he also teaches Site Analysis, Regional Planning and Permaculture Design. His past research includes assessing the capacity of Vancouver to meet it's food needs locally, the topic on which this workshop is based.
He has co-taught Permaculture workshops at OUR Ecovillage, B.C., Lost Valley Education Centre, OR, University of Northern British Columbia and University of Victoria. James brings an experiential flare to his teachings, following a teaching career in Canada, New Zealand, and the United States, and teacher training at Queen’s University in Outdoor and Experiential Education. James has studied Permaculture, natural building, biodynamic farming and community and brings to the team a deep understanding of the art and science of sustainability.
