Mental illness is the leading cause of disability in Canada. 1 in 5 people will experience a mental health problem/ addiction in any year.

About this event

  • Over 2 million Canadians aged 15 years and older have a mental health-related disability.
  • This statistic represents 7% of Canadian adults and youth.
  • The disease burden of mental illness and addiction in Ontario is 1.5 times higher than all cancers combined and more than 7 times that of all infectious diseases.
  • Five of the most frequently reported mental health-related conditions are: anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and trauma-related disorders.

Join CAMH psychiatrist, Dr. Laura Lachance in conversation with Tamara Green & Sarah Grossman, certified nutritional practitioners and authors of The Living Kitchen cookbook for an evening focused on the inextricable link between nutrition and mental health.

As a leading specialist in the newly emerging field of nutritional psychiatry research, Dr. Lachance will explore the profound impact of dietary choices on your overall wellness, while Tamara and Sarah will teach you easy meal prep tips for eating your way to mental wellness. The two will also highlight savoury recipes from their new cookbook, The Living Kitchen, which will be available for purchase at the event. Bid on awesome silent auction items and enjoy a delicious and nourishing dinner prepared by the culinary arts students at Centennial College.

Food, Mood and Brain Health is an opportunity to shine the light on mental health issues, reduce the persistent stigma and bring the message of hope to patients and families whose lives are affected by mental illness. The Patient and Family Advisory Council (PFAC- Psychiatry) at Sunnybrook is proud to host this event to raise awareness of its role in promoting a culture of patient and family-centered care by working collaboratively with mental health providers at Sunnybrook. The funds raised will support vital programming and services for patients and families on the road to recovery at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. All funds generously support the Sunnybrook Department of Psychiatry Patient and Family Advisory Council.

Transform your brain, your health – and, ultimately, your life!
