Event description

Description

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. Fortunately, the same change in diet that has been shown to be so effective in turning diabetes around also helps to protect the heart, quite dramatically. Dean Ornish, M.D. and Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn were among the first to show that a change in lifestyle could be as effective as and much safer than bypass surgery for those with significant heart disease. The World Health Organization says hypertension (high blood pressure) is “the most important preventable cause of premature death in developed countries.” The good news is that blood pressure changes happen quickly, and plant-based diets help lower high blood pressure within a short time frame. There is no time like the present to eat to live. Fortunately, food that is good for you does not have to taste like medicine.

This is a combined program, offering all the nutrition info and most of the recipes from 2 PCRM Food for Life classes classes - Keeping a Healthy Heart and Healthy Blood Pressure - in a shortened 3 hour class format. This class offers a unique opportunity to:

  • Acquire knowledge about the link between diet and heart disease
  • Experience the benefits of plant-based nutrition
  • Learn the practical cooking skills needed to help you on your journey to better health

In this class, you’ll sample cholesterol-free foods that are full of flavor and health-promoting benefits. In addition to valuable nutrition education, you will get to sample different dishes, take home recipes and handouts, all in a supportive group setting. This class is limited to 8 participants

Food for Life is a community-based nutrition education program of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM). PCRM is a nonprofit organization of doctors and laypersons working together for compassionate and effective medical practice, reasearch, and health promotion.
