Over a four-month period, you will learn directly from industry experts who will share the tools and strategies needed to move your food idea from concept to reality. You will also gain the expertise to develop a solid business plan and prepare to sell your culinary creations in a retail environment.

All workshops take place at Hudson County Community College. Every class includes a light dinner and the opportunity to network with other food makers.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS

January 24: 1st 10 Steps to Starting a Food Business

Jumpstart your food business with the first in a series of workshops that will help you gain the knowledge to make your culinary dreams come true. Learn how to create a simple action plan that will take you from concept to execution of your idea, including how to:

  • Determine the best legal structure for your food business
  • Register and protect your entrepreneurial venture
  • Obtain a license to sell your food product

You will also learn the importance of food safety and will hear directly from the experts: Jay Savulich of Rising Tide Capital, Michael Cinosky of NJ Restaurant Supply and Lloyd Ortuoste founder of #Baonanas.


February 7: Food Product Concept Development

The success of your food product depends on having the right concept. This workshop will give you the tools needed to develop and solidify your food product idea, including how to:

  • Use marketplace trends and consumer purchasing habits to your advantage
  • Create a competitive analysis
  • Clearly define your target market
  • Develop a unique selling proposition for your product; and
  • Get consumer feedback through food product testing

You will also get tips on finding the right name for your product and will learn the importance of logo design and developing effective packaging.


February 21: Legal Considerations for Food Entrepreneurs

Find the right path through the regulatory and legal requirements for your food business. Get the scoop on how to protect your company from experts Faith Greenfield, former Campbell Soup Company Legal VP and Ronald Levine, Partner and Co-Chair of the Litigation Department at Herrick, Feinstein LLP. Topics include:

  • Managing product liability risks
  • Regulation of food production
  • Labeling and marketing; and
  • Intellectual property trademark basics


March 14: Pricing Your Food Product for Profitability

Ensure that your passion project is actually a profitable product. Learn how to develop a successful business pricing model based on food costs, labor and overhead and gain the knowledge necessary to make objective purchasing and sales decisions.

A workbook, notepad and pencil will be provided for each student. Please be sure to bring a calculator.


March 28: Food Business Operations

Determining how your business will actually run will ultimately help you succeed. During this workshop, you will learn how to develop a day-to-day food business operations plan that includes:

  • Specific revenue goals
  • How much product to prepare for each farmers market or event
  • Where and when to purchase supplies
  • Creating a food preparation, production and packaging process
  • Developing a food safety plan
  • Tracking business progress through online tools like Quickbooks

The course will also cover how and when to hire employees and the importance of customer service and relationship building.


April 4: Marketing Your Food Business on a Budget

With thousands of food products introduced each year, marketing and branding have become more important than ever but it does not have to break the bank! This course offers tips on how to create attention for your brand on the cheap by:

  • Developing your brand story
  • Building an audience by engaging consumers in a meaningful way
  • Finding the best social media platforms to reach your target market and using tools to manage your accounts
  • Building relationships with influencers and collaborate with complementary food brands
  • Taking quality pictures, editing photos and working with photographers


April 25: Funding Your Food Business

Finding the capital to start and stay in business can be challenging. This workshop covers everything food entrepreneurs need to know to seek funding for their business, including:

  • How to bootstrap your business
  • The advantages and disadvantages of friends and family funding
  • Tips on obtaining a small business loan
  • Running a successful crowdfunding campaign
  • Developing a plan to attract investors, close an investment and how to keep them happy
  • How to proceed after you have obtaining funds
