A day to retreat, reflect, cook, and build community

Many in Northwest Wisconsin are still involved in agriculture—or don’t have to go too far back to find connections to the farm and to the land. Of course, we all eat and, as Wendell Berry writes, eating itself is “an agricultural act.” But it is fair to say that we are more and more disconnected from the sources of our food, from the intimacy of eating, from the appreciation that life itself is a gift and that we are daily dependent on the miracle of seeds, water, air, soil, and light being transformed into our daily bread.

The day should be a lovely mix of conversation, cooking, teaching…and eating! We’ll begin with time for reflection and soup making. Then we’ll let our lunch simmer and begin to reflect on our call to care for all creation and on how food choices impact people and places near and far. We’ll enjoy our soup and then continue to discuss how we might move toward a more just system that would provide greater access to healthy food for all people. We’ll take time to consider the sacramentality of food and how faith communities can express that awareness practically and programmatically.

Facilitators: Mike Schut and Kari Olsen

Mike Schut serves as Farm Table’s Senior Program Director. He has nearly twenty years of experience serving faith-based communities including 11 years at Earth Ministry and four years for the national Episcopal Church as Economic and Environmental Affairs Officer. Mike has edited/partially authored three books, including Food and Faith: Justice, Joy, and Daily Bread. His others are the award-winning Simpler Living, Compassionate Life and Money and Faith: The Search for Enough. He received his M.S. in Environmental Studies from the University of Oregon and his B.S. in Biology from Wheaton College in Illinois.

Kari Olsen is a Deacon in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, serving with a specific eye towards food ministry. Kari discerned her call into the ministry while working in different kitchens for six years, particularly while she was Food Service Coordinator at Holden Village--a remote Lutheran retreat center in the Cascade Mountains of Washington State. Kari has her Master of Arts in Ministry and currently serves as the Kitchen Coordinator at Christ Lutheran on Capitol Hill in St. Paul, and as the Mission Explorer for Shobi's Table, developing a food truck ministry that will serve as a Pay-As-You-Can Cafe.
