About this Event

While New York's Gilded Age is often characterized by mega-mansions and glittering parties that didn't end until daybreak, it was most often the food and drink served within their urban castles that defined the reputations of these elite families. From gold plates to exotic culinary delicacies, this is the story of how the richest families of old New York showed off their wealth and prestige through the power of their dining room.

Join New York Adventure Club as we explore New York's Gilded Age through the lens of food and dining, and how the dining room of the city's upper class was just as important as their magnificent homes and trend-setting clothing when it came to showing off.

Led by writer, lecturer, and culinary historian Carl Raymond, our digital showcase of food and dining in New York's Gilded Age will include:

  • The transformation of New York's dining scene from forgettable taverns and chophouses of the 18th-century into one of the world's great culinary capitals by the early 20th century
  • The inside scoop of the Delmonico and Sherry rivalry, the two great fine-dining restaurants that competed for the Gilded Age dollar
  • A look at actual menus and dishes created for these grand dinners, both in the great theatrical restaurants and mansions of Fifth Avenue
  • A discussion around some of the most outlandish dinners, which included everything from live horses to swans
  • Vintage and contemporary photographs to take you inside the homes and restaurants of the high-class New York of yesteryears

Afterward, we'll have a Q&A session with Carl — any and all questions about food and dining in New York's Gilded Age are welcomed and encouraged!
