FOOD AND AGRICULTURE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT FORUM

On March 5th, 2019, Harvest Haliburton invites you to take part in a Food and Agriculture Economic Development Forum. This day-long interactive event is your opportunity to learn about the exciting food and agriculture related projects underway in Haliburton County, and to have a voice in shaping the future of our local food sector.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

Municipal Planners and Councillors, Economic Developers, Food Producers/Farmers, Food Processors, Retailers, Restaurateurs, Food Tourism Operators and Promoters, Environmentalists, Eaters, and anyone interested in creating a sustainable food system for our region.

The Forum agenda will include:

  • A Taste of Haliburton's Local Food Assets - Bite-sized presentations highlighting the diversity of food-related organizations, initiatives and enterprises that make our local food system great
  • Keynote Address - A presentation by OMAFRA's Heather Candler and Stephen Duff outlining the tools and strategies available to help our County's local food sector thrive
  • LUNCH! - A Food and Agriculture Forum would not be complete without a delicious lunch showcasing ingredients from our County's many primary producers
  • Enough Talk - Time for ACTION - The afternoon session will be an interactive workshop during which you will have the opportunity to help develop an Action Plan for ensuring that Haliburton County's local food sector continues to thrive

ENOUGH TALK - TIME FOR ACTION!

For the afternoon session, participants will choose one of 5 discussion topics they would like to take part in. These topics aim to address the economic development priorities of Haliburton County's food and agriculture sectors:

  1. Selling and Branding Local Food - Facilitated by Catherine Oosterbaan - Agriculture and Rural Economic Advisor with OMAFRA
  2. Culinary and Food Tourism - Facilitated by Amanda Virtanen - Director of Tourism, Haliburton County
  3. Municipal Food Planning - Facilitated by Jocelyn Beatty - Rural Planner with OMAFRA
  4. Agricultural Economic Development Officer/Committee and the Needs of our Community - Facilitated by Heather Candler - Agriculture and Rural Economic Advisor with OMAFRA
  5. Other Burning Topics - Facilitated by Andrew von Zuben - Owner and Operator of Bedrock and Brambles

For more information on these discussion topics, and to help you choose which one you might want to join, please visit the Harvest Haliburton website.

The afternoon will culminate in an Action Plan session, facilitated by Lisa Tolentino whose strategic planning expertise will help participants develop and prioritize strategies to address our biggest food sector challenges. From planting to policy, we will identify real solutions that will net real results, including producing more food in Haliburton County and growing our local economy. We are all players in this. When you leave, you will leave with real strategies you can take back to your farm, restaurant, municipality or organization to ensure that we are all working together to advance local food in 2019.

*Note: This is a free and accessible event, however cash donations to help cover the cost of lunch are greatly appreciated.
