Event description

Description

On Thursday, November 2 and Friday, November 3, 2017, the Southwest Georgia Project for Community Education, Inc. will host the 2nd Annual Food, Ag and Equity Conference at the Hilton Garden Inn, 101 S. Front Street in Downtown Albany. The conference will begin at 4:00 pm on Thursday and at 8:30 am on Friday. The Conference centers around the development of a sustainable food system and on sustainable agriculture. The 2nd Food, Ag and Equity Conference will bring together farmers, consumers, elected officials and other stakeholders, who are interested in the food that we consume.

Consumers are troubled! As the US food system becomes global, issues of food safety, Genetically Modified Crops, exploited farm workers and even rates of cancers are raising concerns for consumers.

Farmers are struggling! Family farmers are no longer the voice of agriculture as corporations have flooded the industry for profit leaving family owned farms out of markets and money.

The upward trend in local food and agriculture comes with new opportunities. Opportunities for economic development and opportunities to help sustain family farmers. It’s often called the “Good Food Movement”. “When you eat good food grown by family farmers, you know what you’re getting — honest, real food grown by people who care about their land, their community and their future. There is a groundswell of support for local, organic, humanely-raised, family farm identified food! Today, more people than ever want to know where their food comes from, who grows it and how it was grown. This is the Good Food Movement! (FarmAid.org)”

The goals of the conference are to promote local growers, sustainable agriculture and to ensure access to healthy, affordable food in underserved neighborhoods by shifting to a local/regional food system, while building awareness on the foods we eat and the impacts they have on our environment and our bodies.

There is something for everyone. The conference will kick off with a Fresh Food Mixer on Thursday, November 2 at 4:00 pm. The keynote address will convene on Thursday, at 6:30 pm. On Friday, workshops begin at 8:30 am with a quick/low impact aerobics session. Presentations include: Hydroponics and Aquaponics, How to Eat Healthy, Be Healthy, Farming as a Business, Home and Community Gardens and so much more.
