Opening Remarks delivered by UC President Janet Napolitano, who in 2014 together with UC’s 10 chancellors launched the Global Food Initiative that aims to utilize cutting edge UC driven research to help individuals and communities access safe, affordable, and nutritious food, while shaping and driving policy discussions locally and globally.

The Sugar, Stress, Environment and Weight (SSEW)
Center is a collaborative group of cross-UC research scientists and California policy makers who aim to reduce the prevalence and adverse consequences of obesity, included related metabolic diseases and disorders. We focus on the role of social disadvantage, sugar, and stress on diet and obesity. We also aim to conduct strategic research to help inform public policies that promote metabolic health. We are sponsored by the University of California, Office of the President (UCOP), UCSF’s Sugar, Stress, Environment, & Weight Center (SSEW)
, part of the Center for Health and Community, and the UCSF Nutrition & Obesity Research Center (NORC).
