The Texas native, who until recently called San Francisco home, has released three albums, beginning with 2003's basement-tapes, Catalpa. Her studio debut, Escondida, came a year later, and last year's Springtime Can Kill You, released on Anti-, has garnered rave reviews from a range of publications, gathering accolades from the plebeian Entertainment Weekly as well as the decidedly elitist Pitchfork.

Holland, who says that she first began to appreciate traditional music from listening to the Pogues, meditates on the subjects of love and death on the latest disc, lyrically habituating a space both transcendent and profane. On "You're Not Satisfied" she sings of the plight of the unappreciated lover, warning, "No, you're not satisfied with me/ Still you call me your dearie/ Oh, you had your way but someday you'll pay/ For the heartaches you brought to me." Whether the lovers in Holland's songs will pine, as in "Mehitabel's Blues," or pack bags without regrets, as in "Adieu False Heart," is anyone's guess. What is knowable is the intensity and artistry with which these feelings will be conveyed. Holland's live shows are the best way to experience her music, and Friday's Fillmore show should be a doozy. It's the first time Holland has headlined the historic venue, and with her full backing band in tow, it should make for a memorable, righteous night of music. Just don't stand in front of Ms. Holland if you plan on talking. - Elka Karl
