KAIROS Dance Theater continues its exploration of intriguing inspirations and collaborations this summer with the premiere of “Folktales, Fables and Feasts,” an evening of new dance with live music provided by Boston’s vocal chamber ensemble Renaissance Men and the 20-piece Sound Icon orchestra.
Inspired in part by Igor Stravinsky’s 1922 comic opera, “Renard”, KAIROS premieres the opera-ballet “Foxy,” in which Artistic Director DeAnna Pellecchia’s playfully athletic choreography puts a cabaret spin on the politically and socially resonant Russian story.
“Folktales, Fables and Feasts” also remixes drinking songs from Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana into “Tavernous,” where tipsy characters explore the pleasures of gluttony. Additional performances include KAIROS dancers performing an earlier, never-before-seen work called “Seagulls + Phoenixes”; and guest dance artist Stuart Meyers centers gender identity and fluidity in "DRESS", a new solo set to contemporary music by Grammy-nominated cellist Dave Eggar (who wrote a piece specifically for KAIROS).
Renaissance Men sing a four-voice arrangement of Mozart’s comic-opera overture to “The Magic Flute”, and a montage of French and Irish Drinking songs.

Combining strong dance technique with rich visual imagery, live music, set design, and fashion design, KAIROS DANCE THEATER creates commanding live performances that defy the parameters and preconceived notions of ‘contemporary dance’, here in Boston and beyond. RENAISSANCE MEN is a vocal chamber ensemble committed to advancing and invigorating the art of chamber music for tenor, baritone, and bass voices across genres and generations through world-class performance, education, and commissions, within New England and across the United States. SOUND ICON ORCHESTRA has established itself as a leading artistic force in the Boston music scene, performing challenging, cutting-edge contemporary repertoire for sinfonietta that is rarely heard live in Boston and the United States. The three organizations will join forces to collaboratively create FOLKTALES, FABLES & FEASTS, an innovative, multi-sensory evening of world premiere, music and dance performances set to compositions by Igor Stravinsky, Carl Orff, Dave Eggar and others; featuring 10 dancers, 7 singers, a 20-piece orchestra; sets + theatrical lighting by designer Lynda Rieman, costumes by fashion designer Carlos Villamil and imagery by filmmaker Lindsay Lapointe.
