Event description

Description

I'd love to have you join me at my home studio outside Austin, Texas for two days of natural dyeing instruction. No previous experience required, all skill levels welcome.

Saturday we'll focus on the basics of natural dyeing. We'll experiment with a variety natural sources including madder, logwood, and pecans.

Sunday will be all about indigo and it's magical blue results. We'll exlore a variety of shibori and other resist techniques. I'll do some demonstrations and then we'll all dive in.

Sunday evening I'm hosting a free, open house BBQ for students of the workshop and anyone else who would like to join us.

Saturday, November 4th

10:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

First we'll survey the variety of natural sources. We'll discuss harvesting, growing, and sourcing material and the basics of setting up a dye kitchen

12:30 - 1:30 p.m.

Lunch break at the house. (Let me know if you have any dietary restrictions or special requests.)

1:30 - 4:00 p.m.

We'll prepare our fabric for dyeing and discuss the benefits of mordants. We'll learn proper dyeing and dryeing technique and get a chance to experiment with the different sources.

4:00 - 5:00 p.m.

We'll have plenty of time for discussion and questions. This last hour we'll straighten things up and look over everyone's results.

5:00 p.m.

We'll end at 5:00 p.m. and you'll be on your own for dinner and lodging.

Sunday, November 5th

10:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

We'll begin by discussing the history of indigo and some of it's special qualities that set it apart from other natural dyes. I'll share some of my recipes and sources for indigo.

12:30 - 1:30 p.m.

Lunch break at the house. (Let me know if you have any dietary restrictions or special requests.)

1:30 - 4:00 p.m.

We'll discuss shibori resist techniques and learn the basic styles before diverging into our own creations.

4:00 - 5:00 p.m.

We'll have plenty of time to experiment with dyeing and I ask that everybody bring around 2 yards of their own fabric to play with. This could be in the form of pillowcases, shirts, yarn or just yardage. I recommend a natural fiber like cotton, silk, or wool that has been prewashed.

Supplies

Each participant will receive a variety of fabric samples to dye with. I also encourage you to bring 2 yards of additional fabric to experiment with. This could be in the form of pillowcases, shirts, yarn or just yardage. I recommend a natural fiber like cotton, silk, or wool that has been prewashed.

Wear clothes and closed-toe shoes you don't mind getting stained.

We'll be working outside and the temperature in November typically varies from 53°F to 75°F. Your best bet is to dress in layers.

Traveling to Austin

If you'll be flying to Austin for the workshop, you'll need to rent a car. Austin public transportation is a little lacking and our home is 30 miles outside the city center.

For lodging, Austin has a large selection of AirBnB rooms. Also, there's no shortage of botique hotels if your budget allows (Austin Motel, Hotel San Jose, Heywood Hotel, etc).

If you're interested in coordinating with other attendees on transportation or lodging send me an email at maura@folkfibers.com and I'll connect you with others who do the same.
