Description

Folk Fibers Introduction to Natural Dyes Workshop

The Foundational Elements of Natural Dyes

Experiment with natural color with me at my home studio! Learn how to extract dye from plants, insects, and minerals to color textiles. Explore how natural dyes react with various fibers such as silk, wool, cotton, and linen, and learn step-by-step how to create lightfast and wash-fast dyed fabrics that last. Learn the basics of wild harvesting and growing a dye garden. Observe the flow and set-up of a home dye studio ranging from the simplest of set-ups with a hose and bucket to the evolved dye kitchen with sinks, pots, and burners. Come away with the knowledge and experience to find your own practice of creating beautiful colors with natural dyes. Each participant will receive various fabric swatches of my favorite fibers to dye, and I highly encourage you to bring some remnants of your own to dip into the dye.

Day 1: 10:00am - 5:00pm

We will begin with the basic elements of working with protein and cellulose fibers and natural dyes. We will explore the importance of using of tannins and mordants in the dye process to create lasting colors on both protein and cellulose fibers.

Day 2: 10:00am - 5:00pm

We will experiment with surface design, through preparing fabric using traditinal techniques of fold-and-clamp, stitch-resit and eco printing on fabric.

You will come away from the workshop full of knowledge, inspiration, new friends, and beautiful bundles of naturally-dyed fabric swatches. Lunch and refreshments will be provided both days.

Supplies

Each participant will receive a variety of fabric samples to dye with. I also encourage you to bring 2 yards of additional fabric to experiment with. This could be in the form of pillowcases, shirts, yarn or just yardage. I recommend a natural fiber like cotton, silk, or wool and remeber to prewash your fabric.

Wear clothes and shoes that you don't mind getting stained, feel free to bring an aporn, and rubber gloves if you don't want blue hands.

We'll be working mostly outside and the temperature in May typically varies from 76°F to 95°F. Bring sun protection!

Traveling to Austin

If you'll be flying to Austin for the workshop, you'll need to rent a car. Austin public transportation is a little lacking and our home is 30 miles outside the city center.

For lodging, Austin and Bastrop has a large selection of AirBnB rooms. Also, there's no shortage of botique hotels if your budget allows (Austin Motel, Hotel San Jose, Heywood Hotel, and the nearby Hyatt Lost Pines).

If you're interested in coordinating with other attendees on transportation or lodging send me an email at maura@folkfibers.com and I'll connect you with others who do the same.
