Event description

Description

Every time I do a quilting workshop I wish for more time and more space, so this time I'm trying a three day workshop with only five participants. With this intimate group I'm hopeful everyone will be able to complete a small 36" x 36" quilt like the one above.

My goal is that everyone leaves excited, inspired, and confident to start their next quilt. I hope you'll join me for this creative Labor Day weekend!

Saturday, September 3rd

10:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

We will discuss some basic quilt history and talk about the variety of materials and techniques. I'm particularly interested in how quilts are both utilitarian and symbolic objects of culture.

I'll share some of my favorite historical quilts and we'll look at my little collection of vintage pieces.

I will share my favorite books, sources for materials, and my experience buying and collecting.

12:30 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.

Lunch break at the house.

1:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.

We'll layout our fabric and discuss color palates. I'll share hints from my personal practice that keep the process fun and improvisational.

3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m

We'll jump on the sewing machines and I'll demonstrate my piecing techniques and share what works for me to keep edges straight and get points to line up.

4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

This last hour we will straighten things up and look over everyone's progress.

5:00 p.m.

We'll stop for the day at 5 and you'll be on your own for dinner and lodging.

Sunday, September 4th

10:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
There will be lots of one-on-one time as we finish piecing our quilt tops and prepare for hand quilting.

12:30 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.
Lunch break at the house

1:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

We will begin hand stitching our quilts! I will share my preferred thread, Japanese sashkio (heavy cotton) thread.

5:00 p.m.
We should make good progress on your quilts, but I encourage you to take it with you and try to finish it during the evening to ensure you leaving with a finished product. You'll be on your own for dinner and lodging.

Monday, September 5th

10:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

We'll begin the morning learning how to attach the quilt "binding" or finished edge. There's a few different styles, but I prefer to attach the double fold with a machine and then finish with a blind hand stitch

There's a couple tricks to cutting the binding and trimming the quilt that makes things easier.

12:30 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.
Lunch break at the house

1:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

We'll work to complete our quilts and finish the binding.

4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m

We'll cap off the workshop with group reflection and critique of our work.

Supplies

To get the most out of the workshop, I ask that everyone bring their own sewing machine. This will really help us be productive and increase the odds of everybody finishing their quilt.

It would also be helpful if you could bring new universal needles for your machine and fabric scissors.

I'll provide all the material needed to produce a 36" square quilt including the fabric, iron, batting, and thread.

Experience

This workshop is for all skill levels, but attendees should had basic knowledge of your sewing machine with confidence in stitching two pieces of fabric together unaided.

Traveling to Austin

If you'll be flying to Austin for the workshop, you'll need to rent a car. Austin public transportation is a little lacking and our home is 30 miles outside the city center.

For lodging, Austin has a large selection of AirBnB rooms. Also, there's no shortage of boutique hotels if your budget allows (Austin Motel, Hotel San Jose, Heywood Hotel, etc).

We'll be working inside, but pack knowing that September is hot in Texas with temperatures reaching the upper 90s most days.

If you're interested in coordinating with other attendees on transportation or lodging send me an email at maura@folkfibers.com and I'll connect you with others who do the same.
