About this Event

Are owls really wise? The seductive blink of their eyes and slow turns of their heads certainly suggest deliberation and purpose. Wisdom, however, is hardly an attribute of these efficient killing machines. The large head is mostly occupied with an extraordinary hearing apparatus and out-sized eyes that leave little room for a fairly modest brain. So what makes owls so special, nearly everything! Join us to tap into your inner ornithologist.

Hans Peeters is an ornithologist, artist, author, and naturalist. He completed his graduate studies at UC Berkeley, then taught biology, zoology and ecology for 37 years. He is the author and illustrator of Mammals of California (2004), Raptors of California (2005), and Owls of California and the West (2007), as well as a number of scientific papers. He has contributed illustrations to several well-known field guides to North American birds and Birds of South Asia, The Ripley Guide. His paintings have been exhibited in museums worldwide and have been used for postage stamps promoting conservation.
