KGI’s December Focus Track Friday explores the evolving pharmaceutical industry – how changes in research and development operations will drive companies to adopt different organizational models and strategies, and to hire individuals with new skill sets.

In the past, most large global pharmaceutical companies and some smaller companies were “FIPCO’s” – fully integrated pharmaceutical companies – that had complete drug discovery, development, sales, and marketing operations in-house.  Historically, the drug discovery process in FIPCO organizations has been accomplished using well-trained in-house scientific staff, who are managed by senior scientist-managers - PhD-level scientists with many years of drug discovery experience and additional training in managerial skills.

Recently, some pharmaceutical companies have been experimenting with outsourcing significant parts of their drug discovery operations to external contract research organizations.  With this change, the drug discovery organization may require employees with different skills–individuals who can efficiently identify and qualify service providers, establish the necessary corporate relationships, and manage the relationships after the deals are in place.

Focus Track Friday – Pharmaceutical Discovery and Development will feature individuals from the pharmaceutical industry to speak about recent trends in outsourcing, and how those changes may impact the structure of drug discovery and development organizations.  Speakers will include managers in drug discovery organizations, some of whom are currently implementing the outsource model and others who are considering it, and biotechnology human resources experts.  We will explore the extent to which a shift in the amount and type of outsourcing is occurring in pharmaceutical discovery organizations and the ramifications for the efficiency of drug discovery and for the composition of the drug discovery workforce.

This event aims to help our students learn more about possible careers in the biotech and pharmaceutical industry, or in industries providing products and services to biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies.  We also hope to provide an interesting and informative session where industry insiders can explore this changing business model.
